Two simple, useful services
Key cutting and rekeying, explained
People mix these up all the time, so here's the plain-English version, and when each one is the right call.
Key cutting makes a copy of a key you already have, or a fresh key from the lock itself. It's what you want when you need spares for family, roommates, staff or a spare hidden safely away.
Rekeying changes the pins inside a lock so old keys no longer work and a brand-new key does, without replacing the lock. It's the fast, low-cost way to lock out anyone who might still have a key: a previous owner, an ex-tenant, a contractor.
Good times to rekey
When rekeying makes sense
You just moved in
You have no idea how many copies of the old key are floating around. Rekeying gives you a clean slate for less than new locks.
You lost a key
A lost or stolen key is a security hole. Rekey the affected locks and that key becomes worthless.
Too many keys
Front, back, garage, side gate, each with its own key? We can key them alike so one key does it all.

Keys & rekeying questions
Common questions
Is rekeying cheaper than new locks?
Usually, yes, sometimes significantly. You keep your existing hardware and only pay to have the cylinders rekeyed. If your locks are old or low quality though, replacing can be the better long-term value. We'll give you both prices.
Can you cut keys that say "do not duplicate"?
Truly restricted keys can only be copied with the proper authorization, which is exactly the point of them. For standard house keys stamped "do not duplicate," we verify you're the owner or authorized before cutting.
How long does rekeying take?
Most homes are done in well under an hour. A single lock takes just a few minutes once we're on site, so rekeying several doors is still a quick, same-visit job.
Can you make a key without the original?
Often, yes. For many locks we can originate a new key by reading the lock itself, no existing key required. It's the same skill behind our lockout and lost-key work, so a missing original usually isn't a dealbreaker.
Do you cut keys for mailboxes, cabinets and padlocks?
Yes. Beyond house and office door keys, we cut and duplicate mailbox keys, file cabinet and desk keys, and padlock keys. Bring us the lock or key and we'll sort out a spare.
