Locked Out of Your House? 7 Things to Do First
It happens to almost everyone eventually: the door clicks shut and your keys are on the other side. Before you panic, put your shoulder into the door or climb through a window, take a breath. Here are seven calm, sensible steps that get you back inside without turning a small problem into an expensive one.
1. Stop and check every door and window
It sounds obvious, but in the moment people forget. Walk the whole house. A back slider, a garage side door or a rarely-used entrance is often unlocked. Just don't force anything or climb to a second-floor window, a lockout isn't worth a fall.
2. Look for your spare, if you have one
If you stashed a spare with a trusted neighbor, a family member or in a proper lockbox, now's the time. (Note for later: under the mat or in a fake rock is not a safe spot, burglars check those first.)
3. See who else has a key
A partner, roommate, parent or landlord may have a copy close by. A quick call could save you a service fee entirely. If someone can get to you in a reasonable time, it's often the easiest fix.
4. Don't try to "credit card" the lock
The movie trick of sliding a card to pop a latch rarely works on a modern deadbolt, and mostly just snaps your card or scratches the door. Worse, YouTube "hacks" like drilling or prying can wreck a perfectly good lock and leave you paying for a replacement and the entry. Damage-free entry is what a locksmith does for a living.
5. Get somewhere safe if it's cold or late
If it's freezing, dark or you feel unsafe waiting outside, sit in your car or step into a nearby business while you sort things out. Your comfort and safety come before the door.
6. Call a local locksmith and ask for a price
When self-help runs out, call a locksmith, and ask for the price up front. A good one will give you a clear range on the phone and an honest arrival time. Be wary of a quote that sounds too cheap; that's a classic bait-and-switch. Have ID ready, since any reputable locksmith will confirm you're allowed to enter before opening the door.
7. Once you're in, prevent the next one
A lockout is a great nudge to set up a backup plan:
- Cut a spare key and leave it with someone you trust, or in a real lockbox.
- Consider a keypad or smart lock so a forgotten key never strands you again, see our smart lock installation page.
- Program your locksmith's number into your phone now, so it's there when you need it.
